Avalanche Warning to Expire Saturday AM

Issued 11-27/Noon.  With avalanches still cascading off the high Chugach, warm temps and rain at lower elevations, HIGH avalanche conditions will continue through Saturday am when precip should stop and temps drop to the mid-20’s through Sunday. Avalanches continue to be active as of this advisory above 2000′ in the Pass and above 4000′ in Port Valdez.  This event has brought significant snowfall amounts to Thompson Pass and extraordinary amounts above 4000′.

Using the 24-HOUR RULE, CONSIDERABLE avalanche conditions will remain though Sunday. This will allow the deep new snows to settle and with decreasing temps, freeze up and bond near surface layers.  Deeper assessments are needed to better assess the stability of the entire snowpack once this weather event subsides.

By Monday, winds switch to the north with cloudy to fair skies though mid-week with a chance of flurries Tuesday morning.
