Avalanche and Ski Report – January 1, 2016-1700AKT

Ventured up Obsession from Worthington Glacier State Park, crossing the road and meandering carefully to mid-mountain. The differences in snow depth from the road to 3500 was “obese”, if that word is allowed to describe the snowpack I encountered.  I’ve never probed 240cm at this site.  Nearly a third of the depth is new storm snow….and there is more on the way.

A CONSIDERABLE AVALANCHE HAZARD will remain though Sunday AM as noted in my previous statement. Another low blast Valdez again Saturday am, not as hard as the last two systems. Once again the snowpack will reach a tipping point, so expect some surface sluffing and slab releases at high north aspects. All of this snow needs at least 24 hours to settle out more or less dependent on a variety of factors, which pushed the stability concerns into Sunday, despite a clearing trend and some fair weather late Saturday.
