Valdez Ski And Avalanche Report – Compound Schoolbus
SKI– VERY GOOD -Solo up Schoolbus via Telemark under flat light conditions finding good powder skiing when the sun popped out enough to ski it. I found 4-8″ of new snow over the nice old snow and spotty slabs we had previously.
AVALANCHE – With the sun busting out a bit tomorrow and more on Thursday, a CONSIDERABLE avalanche hazards will exist on south aspects. New and old snow will have the potential to be very active with point releases, wet slides, and possible step-downs dependent on how high our daytime temps rise on Wednesday. Any prolonged direct sun will get some reactions.
On other aspects, a MODERATE due to small pockets of wind slab masked with new snow on mainly southwest aspect and along expose areas above mid-mountain. Good stability in protected terrain and fall-lines. Northerly flow continues to dominate, so we could get some slight drifting and flagging as things clear out.
WX – PARTLY CLOUDY or better in Thompson Pass through Thursday. Temps cooling to teens at night with daytime reaching 35F. Wind northerly with a chance for pesky gusts.
